Sykes Specialist Contracting has just completed the award finalist refurbishment of the Norwegian Timber Framed Houses at Fenham, Newcastle Upon Tyne.

The project was one of the first CESP schemes to commence and was jointly funded by EDF Energy and Your Homes Newcastle.

The installation in Fenham was the first time the Alumasc Swisslab system had been used on Norwegian Timber Frame Housing and therefore had to be signed off by an RIBA architect to meet the funding criteria set out by Ofgen before work could commence.

The timber Framed Houses were built in Fenham in 1924 and the repair and maintenance of the houses was becoming problematic. Redecoration of the blocks alone every five years were proving costly and this was compounded by high tenant energy costs.

The installation of the Swisslab System addressed these problems, with a completed through the wall u value of 0.28w/m2k the tenant would finally start to cut the fuel bills and with the installation of a silicone textured render finish the client no longer had the added costs of redecoration every five years.

"The Swisslab system has given a radical uplift to the homes and made a measurable difference to the lives of the tenants," says David Langhorne, Director of property Services at YHN. "The system has greatly improved the appearance of the properties, which has already helped to foster neighbourhood pride."
