ESH Property Services and Sykes Specialist Contracting have just completed a three year programme of refurbishment Incorporating Wetherby External Wall Insulation and Marley Eternit cladding to 400 houses on Biddick Hall Estate, South Shields.

The scheme comprising of two house types Wimpey No Fines and Myton Houses was started by Sykes and ESH back in October 2010 as part of South Tyneside Homes programme to achieve Decent Homes Standard.

The extensive refurbishment of the properties including new kitchens, bathroom, re wiring, heating systems windows and doors and last but not least external wall insulation resulting in more energy efficient homes thus reducing tenants fuel bills and making for a more comfortable living environment.

One of the tenants to benefit from the work is Frieda Gilland (94), who has lived in her home for almost 55 years. She said: "I am really pleased with the work that has been carried out and it has been well worth the wait. My house is now a lot warmer."

Local councillors Anne Walsh, Olive Punchion and Tom Pigott are also delighted with the transformation of the estate so far.

In a joint statement, they said: "The work that is being carried out in Biddick Hall has brought about tremendous change, improving the lives of the tenants who live in these homes and the appearance of the estate. South Tyneside Homes and their partner contractors have done a fantastic job in delivering the programme.

Leading gas supplier Scottish and Southern Energy PLC made available to the client external funding through the Community Energy Savings Programme.

As well as upgrading the thermal performance of the properties the client was keen to move away from the original grey appearance of the existing housing stock and subsequently specified the Wetherby brick effect render and silicone textured finish together with an option for Marley eternity cedral cladding.

Sykes Specialist Contracting Ltd secured the work through competitive tender however the company was selected based on its extensive experience in installing both the Wetherby Insulated Render system and the Marley Eternit cladding system. Due to the success of the scheme Marley have now introduced its own External Wall Insulation system incorporating there own products as the finish rather than render.

Although the scheme was not technically difficult are success was achieved by ensuring the quality of the product installed was greater than that which was expected and also ensuring we adhered to the programme and all matters relating to Health and Safety. This was achieved and as part of a team with the scheme hitting consistently high levels of customer satisfaction peaking at 9.89 (max score 10) in September 2011.

Sykes played a key role in this project ensuring success was achieved the projects targets and goals were delivered.
